As you may already know, when a customer orders any merchandise from a vendor with his credit card, that vendor must pass on a percentage of the sales amount to the corresponding credit card company. Thus, the vendor "pads" the pricing to cover the cost. Likewise, the vendor must further "pad" the price in order to cover the time consuming process of validating both credit cards and checks (to ensure the payment is not fraudulent).
